Rally Preparations
Read the rulebooks: Everything from soup to nuts is covered in the rulebooks. If you are not sure about what kind of twine to tie your hay bale with, what bit is approved for your horse, what exactly is included in an equine medical kit, GUESS WHAT? It's all in the rulebooks.... Everything you wanted to know and were afraid to ask... and if you can't find the information, ask your rally organizers. It's a LOT of work to go to a rally so if you are updated on the right information not only will you help yourself, but you'll make the rally organizer's lives a lot easier!! Go to www.ponyclub.org, click on forms, click on rulebooks and Happy Reading! But just to forewarn you!!!, rules for tack, equipment, etc vary from discipline to discipline. So the bit you use for cross country may not be suitable for games! Or using a whip in a dressage ring as a D may not be suitable in a dressage test in eventing...And if you still have questions, then please ask!!
Thoroughly clean and condition your tack a week in advance: The day before should be a good wipe down and cleaning if necessary. Horsemanagement judges are very strict about dry and cracking tack....make sure yours is in good working order!! It's a BIG safety concern! Check your stitching, keepers, etc.... Attached is a file on How to Clean Tack. A lot of good suggestions and words of wisdom!
Bring extra water for your horse: The day of the rally bring extra water (we bring about 4 - 5 gallon buckets) for your horse to start the day off with. Not only will this save you a lot of running to the water truck (initially) it will save time in setting up the tie off trailers, etc. It also helps if the H20 hasn't arrived on site yet...(which has happened in the past).
Bring anything else that you can think of that you might need for rally set up and throughout the rally:...hemp baling twine, duct tape, pens, liquids for yourself to drink (I highly recommend Gatorade as it replenishes lost minerals), etc. If you haven't gone to a rally, ask someone that has about things you should bring for the "just in case"...
