GENERAL INFORMATION
Membership
Bristol Hills membership is open to all young people between the ages of five and twenty-five.
New members must join by March 1st. Members must pay a membership fee annually. This fee covers insurance, clinics, and instructors. Participating members are expected to be members in good standing. This means the members attend at least 50% of all meetings, mounted and unmounted.
They contribute to activities and events sponsored by the club, such as fundraising, clinics, seminars, and rallies. Each family is expected to raise $100 through fundraising or donate services (mowing lawns, etc.) to equal that amount. Pony club members are expected to provide their own proper attire, tack and pony. Information on current fundraisers.
Tack and Attire
Helmets must be ASTM and SEI approved and must be dated within the last five years. Members must have rubber or leather riding boots or paddock boots with a heel and be wearing them whenever horses are present. Riders are required to have an armband, with a current medical release signed in ink, worn at all times during mounted meetings. English style tack is used at all pony club events. Tack is expected to be in good condition, clean, and appropriate for the event members are participating in. Leather or break-away halters are to be used at mounted meetings.
Parental Expectations
Bristol Hills Pony Club is a volunteer organization and depends on the support and participation of parents. Parents are encouraged to stay at the meetings to help as needed. Parents are also asked to commit to a position to support pony club. Positions might include coordinator, instructor, fundraising, etc. Pony club parents are responsible for transporting or arranging for their pony to be at meetings, and events. Parents are required to provide medical releases in order for their rider to participate.
Meetings
BHPC begins its unmounted meetings in late January and starts its mounted meetings when the weather is agreeable. Most meetings are held on Saturdays from 9 AM to 12 PM. Unmounted meetings might include seminars, clinics, or other educational experiences. Mounted meetings are held at various locations depending on the activity, with various instructors.
Ratings
The Pony Club rating system is designed to gage the progress of each member's riding ability and horse management skills. Each member begins as an unrated member and progresses through various levels from D1 to A at their own pace. Rating tests include riding evaluations as well as written or oral evaluations. Pony club members are advised to read the Pony Club manual for their level. All tests and rulebooks can be found on the Pony Club Website.
Rallies
Rallies are team-oriented competitions that members can compete in. They include a variety of events. Some such events might be dressage, games, eventing, show jumping, polocross, and quiz rallies. Each member enters according to his or her ability and rating. Most rallies have a separate entrance fee. Often our club will support one or more rallies throughout the summer. Parents are encouraged to participate in the set up and organization of these events.
